1978-2024: A Builder for Eternity
Dr. Duane F. Steeves
Founder of Liberty World Ministries, 1978
Dr. Duane F. Steeves dedicated his life to theological education, missions work, and raising up Christian leaders. Though his earthly journey concluded in 2024, his vision lives on through Liberty World Ministries, the leaders he trained, and the countless lives transformed by his faithfulness to God's call.
In 1978, Dr. Steeves founded Liberty World Ministries with a radical vision: to reach the unreached, train the untrained, and demonstrate Christ's love through both word and deed. For over four decades, he poured himself into this calling, establishing churches, training ministers, supporting orphans, and going to the hardest places on earth with the simple message of the gospel.
A Man Who Hazarded His Life:
Dr. Steeves was described by those who knew him as "a man who hazarded his life for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ" (Acts 15:26). He endured hardship, fiery trials, and tribulations to fulfill the ministry he received from the Lord. Whether traveling to earthquake-devastated regions, climbing dangerous mountain paths to reach remote villages, or persevering through opposition, Dr. Steeves never counted his life dear to himself.
A Heart for the Harvest:
Dr. Steeves believed deeply in Matthew 9:37-38: "The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest." He didn't just pray this prayer—he answered it, and he inspired countless others to answer it as well.
A Teacher and Equipper:
More than just doing ministry himself, Dr. Steeves invested in raising up the next generation. He established Sozo Bible College not merely to impart knowledge, but to form Christ-like character and equip believers for effective, lifelong ministry. His graduates serve around the world today, extending his vision far beyond what he could accomplish alone.
Dr. Steeves established Liberty World Ministries with four interconnected ministry areas, each essential to fulfilling the Great Commission:
| Ministry Division | Dr. Steeves' Vision | Continuing Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Sozo Bible College | Train godly, equipped ministers who combine sound theology with practical ministry skills | Continues under Rev. Joseph O. Bauché (Dean), training the next generation of leaders |
| World Missions | Reach the unreached through church planting, orphanage support, and indigenous leader training | Active partnerships in Philippines, India, Pakistan, Mexico, and beyond |
| Life Centre Church | Demonstrate vibrant local church life as the foundation for all other ministry | Thriving congregation in Langley Township, BC |
| Fellowship of Evangelical Ministers | Support and credential pastors and ministers with accountability and resources | Growing network of ordained ministers serving globally |
Dr. Steeves at Life Centre Church — Christmas 2009
Dr. Steeves' heart beat strongest in the harvest fields. He traveled extensively, often to dangerous and difficult places, to preach the gospel and plant churches. Whether at home equipping the saints at Life Centre or abroad in remote mountain villages, his passion for souls never dimmed.
Key Ministry: Church planting in remote, previously unreached areas
Impact: Established numerous churches, trained indigenous leaders, responded to earthquake disasters
Miracles: Witnessed healings (including a blind boy healed during a service), salvations, and entire villages transformed
Legacy Partners: Rev. Clifford & Jose Fedrau continue the work Dr. Steeves began over 30 years ago
Key Ministry: Supporting orphaned children with education, food, and spiritual discipleship
Impact: Partnered with local churches to care for vulnerable children, provided pastoral training and encouragement
Vision: Holistic care—meeting physical needs while ensuring children know Christ
Continuing: Liberty World maintains these partnerships, supporting hundreds of children
Key Ministry: Reaching previously closed communist nations with the gospel
Impact: Church establishment, Bible distribution, training emerging leaders in a spiritually hungry land
Vision: Seizing the harvest window after decades of atheistic oppression
Pioneer Spirit: Dr. Steeves went where others feared to go
Key Ministry: Church ministry, missions mobilization, training centers
Impact: Recruited mission trip participants (like James Patterson), raised up laborers for the harvest
Vision: North American believers equipped and sent to the nations
Fruit: Many who heard Dr. Steeves preach went on to become missionaries
Dr. Steeves collected and shared testimonies of God's faithfulness throughout his ministry. These stories inspired faith and demonstrated that God's power is still available today.
Dr. Steeves was not only a man of action but also a teacher and communicator. His messages combined biblical depth with practical application, always pointing people to Christ.
Many of Dr. Steeves' teachings have been preserved and are available for study and encouragement. His weekly messages, sermon notes, and biblical insights continue to edify believers and train ministers.
Dr. Steeves' greatest legacy is not buildings or programs—it's people. He invested in men and women who now carry forward his vision with their own unique callings and anointing.
Role: President, CEO & Dean of Sozo Bible College
Carries forward Dr. Steeves' vision with apostolic leadership, maintaining the four ministry divisions while bringing fresh anointing and direction. Rev. Bauché ensures that Liberty World Ministries remains faithful to its founding vision while adapting to reach new generations.
Network: Seven ordained ministers plus many graduates
From Alberta to the Philippines, from Vancouver to India, the ministers Dr. Steeves trained and ordained continue his work. They pastor churches, plant new works, train leaders, and demonstrate that his investment in people produces eternal fruit.
Impact: Serving globally in various ministries
Hundreds of students trained under Dr. Steeves' leadership now serve as pastors, missionaries, teachers, and Christian workers. The theological foundation and ministry skills they received continue to bear fruit in churches and mission fields worldwide.
Inspired: Countless believers mobilized for missions
Like James Patterson who joined Dr. Steeves in the Philippines and witnessed miracles, many believers encountered God's call through mission trips. These experiences transformed ordinary believers into passionate laborers for the harvest.
| Holistic Ministry | "Spiritual, mental, and physical needs met for God's glory" - Never separate the gospel from compassionate action |
| Indigenous Leadership | Train local leaders to shepherd their own people rather than creating dependency on Western missionaries |
| The Harvest is Plentiful | Never doubt God's ability to save—the problem is not the harvest but the lack of laborers (Matthew 9:37-38) |
| Character Before Ministry | Ministry flows from intimacy with Christ; programs without godly character produce nothing eternal |
| Faith for Miracles | God still heals, delivers, and demonstrates His power when His people step out in faith |
| Go to the Hard Places | Hazard your life for Christ's name; don't seek comfort when souls hang in the balance |
Though Dr. Steeves is with the Lord, his vision marches on through Liberty World Ministries. Every aspect of the work he established continues to bear fruit:

Partners still active in Philippines, India, Pakistan, Mexico

The best way to honor Dr. Steeves' memory is to continue the work he started. His vision was never about himself—it was always about Christ and His Kingdom.
